History: Her parents moved to the United States from Mexico legally, and naturalized. She was born in Houston, Texas to
José and María Guadalupe Trujillo. Her father originated from Seville, Spain and her mother from Guadalajara,
Mexico. They lived in a Hispanic community, and while she spoke English at school, she often spoke Spanish at
home, and with her neighborhood family and friends. Her family, however, did not have a great income, and
scholarships didn’t come despite her good grades. In order to pay for college, Nina enlisted in the Army. She got
a degree in Risk Analysis and Math, and joined the Engineer Corps.
Three months after graduation she was deployed to Afghanistan to analyze the integrity of many of the
buildings – she was to be over there for six months. She returned unharmed, and went through combat training
while working toward a master’s degree in statistics. She was deployed again, to Iraq, and despite doing the
same work, she was forced to engage in combat.
In her fifth month of deployment they went to investigate a bunker that had housed insurgents. She recognized
the signs of structural damage that was dangerous, and got everyone evacuated in time before it collapsed. Her
leg, however, was crushed. As they traveled back to the base, their convoy was attacked by an IED, and she was
caught in the explosion, narrowly avoiding serious injury. The driver had been killed, and despite her injury she
drove the survivors to safety.
Once back at the base it was discovered she had also been shot, but the pain hadn’t been realized due to the
adrenaline. She was rushed into surgery, and came out fine. However, the military feared for her mental health,
and honorably discharged her with a medal of honor for her heroism.
Her family had never approved of her fighting in the military, and despite her injury, there was always a tension
between her and the rest of her family. Her sister was much more feminine, and had married already. Her
parents wanted her to be like that instead. Unable to deal with their attitudes, she started looking for jobs in a
different city, but an opportunity opened up in Barcelona, Spain.
The city needed a risk analyst to look at the condition of original architecture of the city. She applied and got the
job, and got her EU work permit and passport before moving over to the new country.
